Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! I will be running the Boston Half Marathon on October 12, 2014 while simultaneously raising funds and awareness for the Celiac Disease Foundation as a member of Team Gluten-Free.
I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in September of 2009 at the age of 15. After several months of unbearable symptoms, it was a simple blood test that changed my life forever. The only treatment is to adhere to a strict, gluten-free diet. But sometimes that isnít always easy; Cross-contamination is the biggest enemy of a Celiac and a tiny crumb of gluten can leave us very sick. It sure has been a journey with this disease, with many ups and downs, but in the short 5 years that I have lived gluten-free, I have noticed changes with the production and distribution of gluten-free foods in stores and restaurants. Unfortunately, there is still so much awareness needed surrounding this disease. I, unlike most, was on the luckier side and received my diagnosis rather quickly (9 months verses some who suffer 9 years). However, 95% of people with Celiac Disease remain undiagnosed! Undiagnosed (or diagnosed) Celiac Disease can cause an array of other life-threatening medical problems.
I am determined to finish these 13.1 miles while also helping out the Celiac Community, and raising awareness and money for the Celiac Disease Foundation. Thank you in advance for helping me and the entire Celiac community! Gluten-free may be a "fad" diet to some, but for people like me, it's a life saver and without it, quite frankly, we wouldn't be here.
